For Career Day, I visited my mother’s place of work, The County of Riverside Department of Behavioral Health. My mother is a Clinical Therapist, and she provides psychotherapy to anyone age 59 and older, who suffers from mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, suicidal thoughts, drug abuse, or mood disorders like bipolar. My mother has done this job for the past 3 years. The department of Behavioral Health also provides mental health services to young children, teenagers, and middle-aged adults. There are several clinics all over the county of Riverside, from Temecula, all the way to Coachella Valley. Most patients come to the clinic for weekly services, but some patients are more severe and have to be hospitalized. There are hundreds of employees that work for the Department of Behavioral Health, and lots of job titles. My mother has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, and a Master’s degree in clinical social work, and she is about to take the California state exam to become an independent licensed clinical therapist, so she can open her own private practice. The county offers internships to high school and college students, and once you graduate, they may hire you full-time, with good health and retirement benefits. My mother loves her job. She says helping people is her purpose and passion, so she never feels like she is going to work, instead, she feels like she is being paid to do what comes natural, helping others.
